Against the global warming

by marketing on 1 de December de 2022
Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the earth's oceans and atmosphere, which has been alarming in recent decades. This is a major problem because the entire planet functions by chemical reactions, which are temperature-dependent, so the planet's equilibrium is at stake.

The main cause is the massive emission of greenhouse gases (hereafter GHGs), which retain the heat from the Sun and the thermal radiation produced by the Earth within the atmosphere and on the Earth's surface, keeping the planet's temperature approximately 33°C above what it would be if they did not exist. The main GHGs emitted include water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane and ozone.

The direct effects of global warming are: water shortages, floods, storms, heat waves, droughts, fires, spread of diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever and cholera, increased environmental pollution, malnutrition.

Some of the consequences that have already occurred include:

- The first animal to become extinct due to global warming was the golden toad in 1989.
- Up to one in six plant and animal species may become extinct because they cannot find suitable habitats.
- Between 80% and 100% of bamboo will disappear by the end of the 21st century, and it is almost the only source of food for the endangered giant panda.
- Since the 1950s, Arctic sea ice has decreased by 15 per cent.

- Many Arctic animals, including polar bears and some seal species, could be extinct within 20 years.
- Antarctica loses 151 billion tonnes of ice a year, the equivalent of the weight of Mount Everest.
- Sea levels could rise by 90 centimetres or more by 2100, and in 70 years, the homes of 200 million people (more than 3 times the population of the UK) will be below sea level.
- The Dead Sea is drying up by leaps and bounds.

We know that climate change cannot be avoided, but we can reduce its effects by making some small and large-scale changes to combat it.
For example:

At Varpe we strive to collaborate in improving the conditions of our planet, and we are working on the following actions:
Recycle. By segregating correctly we will give waste a new life.
Use public transport, as private vehicles are responsible for 10% of total gas emissions in the European Union.
Buy environmentally friendly and efficient products. Household appliances should also be labelled with the European energy efficiency label.
Save water. Take short showers and turn off the tap between uses.
Save electricity. Unplug chargers from the mains when not in use, do not leave appliances on standby and use artificial light only when necessary.
Environmental awareness campaigns for saving water, energy and efficient driving.
Correct segregation of waste.
Responsible paper consumption.
Plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Participation in the Zero CO2 project promoted by Barberà del Vallès Town Council.
Protocol for environmental emergencies.

If you would like more information on any of these actions, please contact our quality and environment department (calidad@varpe.es).
